An appeal to the
Chinese/Asian community.
Eleanor
Lee was born on September 2nd 1999 in Bristol to
parents of Hong Kong Chinese background. Even
before she was born Eleanor was experiencing
difficulties and required a blood transfusion whilst
still in the womb.
Eleanor is a beautiful
young girl who has lived a life of courage and
bravery. She has an illness called alpha
thalassemia - a serious blood disorder.
Eleanor's loving parents
Karen and Kenny do their best for their little
daughter. They live in the town of Melksham in
Wiltshire but have to travel to Bristol Children's
Hospital on a regular basis as Eleanor requires
blood transfusions every three or four weeks.
Alpha thalassemia is an
inherited condition and the highest frequency occurs
in Southeast Asia and Africa. Other areas with
increased incidence include Italy, Greece, Middle
East, North Africa and the Mediterranean.
Although this is not
generally a life threatening illness, the patient is
unable to live a "normal" life. Eleanor has
spent much of her seven years in hospitals with
infections and and other complications associated
with her condition.
A
bone marrow transplant may be able to cure her of
this illness. However it really must be an
exact match. Unfortunately Eleanor has not yet
been able to find that match. There are not
enough potential donors of her ethnic background on
the Bone Marrow Register. Her brother Alex is
unable ho help as he is a thalassemia carrier
himself.
So if you are of
Chinese/Asian background you may be the one person
that could help Eleanor to live a "normal" life.
Something she has never had and can only dream
about. If you are between the ages of 18 and
40 then please give hope to Eleanor and others in
similar situations to her.
